The Carbon Removers: Pioneering biogenic carbon removal in Denmark and the UK

Our partners

Airfix is proud to partner with The Carbon Removers (formerly Carbon Capture Scotland) to drive the permanent removal of biogenic CO₂ across Europe. This collaboration combines The Carbon Removers’ expertise in full-chain biogenic carbon removal with Airfix’s strengths in carbon transport, storage and monetisation of bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS). Together, we are advancing key carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and BECCS projects that align with Europe’s climate goals, including increasingly ambitious carbon removal targets in the EU and UK.

Accelerating CDR and BECCS deployment

Our joint efforts are focused on developing and implementing cutting-edge carbon capture and storage solutions, using The Carbon Removers’ state-of-the-art carbon capture technology. Having first started capturing CO₂ in 2024, projects will remove over 20,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually from 2026, with plans in place to scale this capacity to 50,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year across Europe by 2027. These projects target CO₂ from biogenic sources – including agricultural residues, distillery byproducts, and brewery waste – generating additional revenue for local communities. The captured CO₂ will be securely transported and permanently stored in either carbonated building materials or geological storage sites, including those located in the North Sea.

Project spotlight: Denmark biogas facilities

Airfix’s partner, The Carbon Removers, has developed a modular carbon capture and liquefaction system to be deployed at multiple biogas plants in Denmark. This will capture CO₂ that is currently being released into the atmosphere.

  • Operational start: Operations are set to begin in 2026.
  • Capture capacity: Over 20,000 tonnes of CO₂ will be captured in 2026, increasing to up to 50,000 tonnes annually from 2027.
  • Transport: The liquefied CO₂ will be safely transported via a modular logistics chain (truck and ship) to the Greensand Future storage site in the North Sea, with a contract already in place.
  • Certification: Puro certification is expected in 2026.

A shared vision for a sustainable future
